Overview Yomawari Night Alone:
A young girl is walking her dog Poro around town at dusk when a tragic accident forces her to return home with only Poros leash in hand. The girl’s sister commands her to stay home while she goes out into the night to search for the dog. Time passes. Growing impatient, the girl decides to search for her missing sister and dog herself. But when she steps foot outside, she realizes that this is not the same town. The darkness has made the town unfamiliar, and she appears to be utterly alone…save for the spirits that stalk her. The girl must hide from, outsmart, or outrun the hunting spirits while she searches for clues to find her loved ones. There is an extreme over-emphasis on chases in this game, and it is balanced in favour of killing you. Because your stamina drains faster the nearer you are to a spirit, the closer a spirit gets, the harder it becomes to escape. This means that if you are not both ridiculously strategic and lucky with your movements, you will get killed over, and over, and over, and over. It is also split-second punishing, and unfairly punishing. For example, in one chase section, I couldn’t nail it – until I watched a walkthrough and saw the player run south instead of north. It made no difference in distance on the map, but in the game was the difference between dying repeatedly or completing that section Despite this, it really is quite magical. I found the story engrossing, and when I read about the shinto aspects of the different competing spirits / gods, it was really rewarding as in-game, the players actions have a metaphysical relevance. In one section, you have to fulfil a Favour to one spirit in exchange for being allowed to live, so they can maintain their own little fiefdom. In the final section, lighting the shrines on the mountain path felt incredibly profound and mystical. It also has an oppressing feeling to it when you’re walking about which serves the game quite nicely at least at the start it felt like that but by the end it definitely had turned more into freedom because you explore quite a bit in this game and it rewards exploration with lots of little collectibles I liked that a lot.
